It is unlikely that the Sam Adam team will defend Blagojevich in a retrial. The current trial emptied the Friends of Blagojevich campaign fund, which was paying for the ex-governor’s defense. The federal public defender’s office will now pick up the tab for a retrial. The 15-member Blagojevich defense team has been paid at public defender rates throughout the trial. But in the retrial, the public defenders office will only cover the costs of two lawyers. Sam Adam Sr. told me tonight he doesn’t know how his team could mount a defense under those circumstances. The Adams also think it may be wise to bring in new lawyers to take a fresh look at the case. A final decision has not been made, but it looks like Blagojevich will be looking for new attorneys.
