Blagojevich Blog: Lon Monk Cross

Sam Adam Jr.’s aggressive cross examination of Lon Monk continues this morning.  Adam Jr. ripped into Monk’s memory of the 2003 meeting with Tony Rezko, Chris Kelley, Monk and Blagojevich.  Monk testified earlier that it was at that meeting where Rezko laid out 7 or 8 plans to make money off Blagojevich’s position as Governor.  But under Adam’s harsh questioning Monk said that he could not remember any of the schemes except one.  That scheme was to create an insurance company that would get business from the state.  That business was never created.  Monk also said again that no one ever got any money from any of the schemes.
Under questioning Monk again admitted that he got close to $90,000 from Rezko which he told the FBI was a gift.  Adam Jr. characterized the money as “hush money” from Rezko since by then Monk knew Rezko was under FBI scrutiny.  The prosecution objected to the characterization and it was sustained by Judge Zagel who sustained nearly all the goverment’s many objections.
During a break Zagel suggested to Adam that he not start his sentences with a “But” or “You said.”  If you don’t start that way said Zagel, you will reduce your time here by at least 10 percent.
